What type of pantry do you have? Are the cupboards bare or are shelves overflowing? Does a sale at the supermarket mean time to stock-up to you? I am not referring to extreme couponing or purchasing 50 boxes of cereal at one time just because they were on sale and you had 50 coupons. A well-stocked pantry has 30-60 days of food and household items. In other words, you have enough food to allow you to skip grocery shopping for a month if needed.
Here are 3 reasons you should keep a well-stocked pantry:
1. Saves Money. If you keep your pantry well stocked, you will be able to purchase items when they are on sale. If you coupon, using coupons with sale items will add to your savings (sometimes you can even get items free!) It’s important to remember that just because it’s a sale, doesn’t mean you should purchase everything. Focus on buying items your family uses daily and weekly. Purchasing everyday items when they are on sale is a great way to save money.
2. Saves Time. By keeping your basic home needs on hand at all times, you will find there is never a time that you need to “run” to the store because you are out of toilet paper or green beans. Because you are prepared you will always have a little extra. You will be surprised how convenient having an extra bottle of laundry detergent or dish soap makes your life when the current bottle is empty.
As you deplete your stock, keep a list of items you need to replace. Then as they go on sale you will be able to stock-up again. I also usually take a quick look at my shelves before shopping just to be sure I don’t miss anything I will need right away (like garbage bags).
3. Allows for flexible meal planning. Planning a weekly or monthly meal plan is a challenge for me, but if you have a fully stocked pantry, you just go look at the shelves and pick your favorite for dinner. If you do plan your meals in advance, but it just doesn’t feel like Taco Tuesday, you can change the menu.
If you don’t have a well-stocked pantry, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars to get set-up at one-time. Build your pantry in a way that fits your budget. You will be surprised how quickly you can build a great pantry.
How do manage your pantry? What items do you always stock up on when they are on sale?
