Do you ever have moments of inspiration for a fun activity to do with your children? At the time, it seems like a really great idea. However, once you start the activity your great idea…. becomes more like an adventure with Mom.
Yesterday afternoon, I decided it was time to wash my van. My van is white and it always shows dirt. It was a warm almost spring day in Florida, so I decided it would be fun for the children and me to wash my car.
I gathered up the materials. I had to hunt them in the shed (a soap bucket, rags, soap, window cleaner and so forth). It must have been a while since we hand washed our car because a few “new creatures” were living in the soap bucket. While I have lived in Florida most of my life and I understand Florida has many bugs, I prefer that I do not come face to face with them.
Before we could wash the car, we had to empty and clean the bucket. This is when the adventure began. I suggested we just dump the contents in the grass and let the creatures find a new home. But not my children, DiAnna decided to kick the bucket and dirt, grass pieces, and bugs went flying everywhere!
Next, it was time to start the actual washing. Three children and one adult washing a van (and mom saying don’t get wet). Soap and water on everything and everyone. At least, we were able to clean the van quickly. We all worked on a section and we were done in no time.
I think I said many times, “Turn off the water” and “Don’t spray your sister!” I guess getting wet and spraying everyone is part of the fun of home car washing.
When we finished washing my van, they wanted to wash Dad’s SUV too. I decided why not? It was already wet. So we soaped it up and washed Dad’s SUV too.
A few takeaways from this adventure:
- It’s okay to get wet washing the car, everyone will anyway.
- Let the children do the washing, even if they miss a few spots.
- Have fun and enjoy the afternoon.
Car washing at home is definitely an adventure (the youngest child ended up dirtier than the cars before we started the washing project), but there was lots of laughing and giggling. A fun project especially during the hot summer. Till our next adventure….
