Do you find that every time your children are invited to a birthday party you are always rushing at the last minute to get a gift? Having a gift closet or shelf in your home will reduce your stress when the next birthday party invite comes, because you will already have the perfect gift (maybe even a few to select from).
What is a gift closet or shelf? It’s a special place in your home for gifts like children’s birthday parties (don’t forget the nieces and nephews), grandma and grandpa, special holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. When you are shopping throughout the year, if you see the perfect gift for someone on your list, just add it to your gift closet. Soon, you will have a stock of items for whenever a gift is needed.
How to Prepare a Gift Closet for Children’s Parties
Start with basics
As you shop, choose items for your gift closet that would be appropriate for a boy or a girl (i.e. not Barbie or Power Rangers unless you are purchasing for a specific child). Also, select gifts that a child your children’s ages would like (because most likely they will be attending the parties of their friends).
Don’t forget family such as nieces and nephews if they are older or younger than your children. My nephews are almost the same age as my children and they love Legos, so if I see Lego sets at a good price, I get one for their next birthday.
Suggested Items to stock in your closet
Board games like Monopoly, Life, Sorry, Clue!, Apples to Apples
Art sets and coloring supplies
Playdoh and accessories/Play Sand
Age-appropriate books to read
Setting up your closet
How many items should you include? Depends on how many parties you plan to attend. I usually plan on 2-4 per child per year. Of course, if you end up with too many great deals (sometimes the price is just too good), you can always use any extra items you purchased as Christmas gifts. Remember, you are purchasing general items a boy or girl would like and about the same age as your children.
Don’t forget wrapping paper and cards
If you want to be prepared, you should also keep birthday wrapping paper and birthday cards in your gift closet. This way you can wrap your gifts when it’s time and you will have the perfect card too.
Setting up a Gift Closet Saves Money
By planning ahead for birthday parties and other life event gifts, you are able to save money by purchasing the best gifts at the best prices. When you wait until the last minute, you may not be able to find a sale. Since you already have a gift, your stress will also be reduced.
