A Warm Inviting Home
What do you think of when I say home? Do you think of the place where you live? Do you think of the beautiful pictures you see in magazines of homes and hope that some your house may look like one of those homes? To make your house a warm inviting home, you may not need a complete home makeover, just a few easy to do and inviting ideas can make your house a home too!
When my children are tired they say, “Mommy, can we go home?” Home is a place we feel secure, welcome and happy. Home can be our place of rest. If you have ever been without a home like during a move or on a long vacation, you know how wonderful it is to return home.
The place we live is a building, a structure. It’s our house (or maybe an apartment). But our “home” is the special place and memories we have in our heart.
7 Ways to Make Your House a Home
A Home Shares Love Every Day
One of the most important things that will make your house a home is sharing love every day. Give your children a hug and say, “Good morning, I love you!” Take time each day to make each person in your home feel special and loved.
A Home Always Has Fresh Flowers
Fresh flowers brighten a room and they brighten our day. Beautiful, brightly colored flowers can cheer us up when we feel sad.
If you keep fresh flowers in your home frequently, you children will remember those flowers when they are grown as a special memory that was part of your home.
A Home Has an Amazing Welcome Scent
What was you favorite smell at home when you were growing up? Was it your mom baking cookies or your favorite dinner? Remember when you opened the door to home and you smelled that wonderful scent, you were so happy to be home.
The fresh scent of warm cookies makes a house a home. Our sense of smell is deeply connected to our memories. Special scents can make a house a home. What is your favorite scent of home?
A Home Has Lots of Laughter
My youngest daughter laughs really loud when you tickle her. She just squeals in delight when she gets tickled. It’s the type of laughter that fills the entire house and it’s contagious.
Do you have lots of laughter in your house? It’s easy to have a little fun every day. You can tell funny stories, you can tell funny things that happened to you during the day. You can watch a funny show in TV together.
Make your house a home with a little laughter every day.
A Home Has Family Pictures
Our home is filled with family pictures. Pictures from when the children were babies and each year as they are growing up. We also have pictures with grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and family friends.
Family pictures make a house a home and remind us of the important relationships in our lives.
A Home Has Your Favorite Things
What would a home be if you didn’t have your favorite things? Maybe it’s your book collection or your rock collection (yes, I have a themed rock collection). My kids love to display their Lego creations. What favorite things do you have at home?
Of course, your home has your family. Maybe your kids squabble amongst themselves too often, you are get tired of the daily routines and non-sense, but what would home be without your family?
