Starting a Garden with Miracle-Gro Gro-ables
With the start of spring, it’s a great time for family outdoor activities. What better way to have fun outdoors than to start a garden. This weekend, my girls and I planted a few more herbs and vegetables in our spring garden using Miracle-Gro Gro-ables.
3 Reasons It’s Fun for Children to Plant Gardens
They can learn about the planting and growing process.
For the last few years, we have been doing some fall and spring gardens (we live in Florida so we can garden almost year round). Gardening gives the children a chance to learn how to prepare the soil for planting, plant the seeds and nurture them during the growing process.
Gardening is a wonderful project for children because it’s ongoing. It’s not just a one-time activity. They have to water the plants every day, help pull the weeds every week and they get to enjoy watching their plants grow. They learn to stay involved during every step of the growth process.
Gardening is an active and fun learning activity
Gardening is a great way for children to learn about how plants grow. They start with a seed, after a week or two they will see a small plant starting to break through the surface and within a few weeks, you will have full grown flowers or food the family can enjoy. Children love bringing food from the garden to eat for dinner or sharing with others and saying “we grew this!”
Gardening helps children have a fun activity to do outside and encourages more outside time. With school, TV and video games, children spend too much time indoors and being inactive. Gardening is a great way to get them outside and involved.
Gardening is a Lifelong Hobby
Activities and hobbies we learn to enjoy as children will stay with as we grow into adults. Sometimes, as adults we will learn a new hobby we enjoy (I did not garden as a child, but I did learn to enjoy as a parent). Helping children learn the basics of gardening when they are young may help them grow to enjoy planting and gardening too.
Starting a Garden with Miracle-Gro Gro-ables
Miracle-Gro Gro-ables are an easy way to start a garden with your children. They come in little pods ready to plant. Each pod has a seed, potting mix, and plant food. Gro-ables have a variety of vegetables and herbs. We planted tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, and basil.
To plant the Gro-ables, we cleared our garden by breaking up the soil, pulling any weeds and preparing to plant. Planting Gro-ables is a little different than planting seeds in that you need to plant them a little deeper so the entire pod is in the dirt. After we had loosened the dirt, they are very easy to plant, you just push them into the dirt and cover them.
We are looking forward to our Miracle-Gro Gro-ables sprouting and growing herbs and vegetables in our garden. We will be watering them every day and pulling the weeds so they can grow.
