Word for the Week: Mentoring
I have not always considered my role as a parent to be a mentor. When you think about it, the goal of parenting is to mentor and inspire our children. Our mentoring as parents will shape our children into wonderful adults. It was after I read, A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the 21st Century that I began to realize my role as a mentor in educating and training my children.
As we go through this week, how can you mentor your children?
- Set a good example (if you want your children to read more, spend more time reading)
- If you want your children to treat others with kindness and respect, treat others with kindness and respect
- Don’t just direct your children, coach your children. We frequently give our children directions or even direct orders (go clean your room, don’t hit your brother). We can mentor them by coaching them. Asking them how they can organize their room to work for them? Or ask them why they are upset with their brother?
- Be consistent every day. Mentoring as parents is not done just one day or just one conversation. It’s done every day all the time. Yes, we will all have moments when we fail, but just ask forgiveness and start over.
When your child makes a mistake or asks you to do something you don’t think is appropriate, instead of just saying no or telling them to stop, consider how you could use the experience to coach and mentor them. What can they learn from this experience to help them understand how to handle similar situations in the future.
Let me know in the comments how you mentor your children?
