10 mom and son date ideas. 10 fun and inexpensive "dates" for mom & son

You decided that a mom and son date sounds like fun.  Remember, these “dates” don’t have to be expensive and you don’t have to leave your house, it’s about spending time together.  They are about focusing specific time for just you and your son.   What should you do, you ask?

10 Awesome Mom & Son Date Ideas

Having an awesome mom & son date is more than what activities you do on your date, it’s about the special memories your make and special bonds you grow that will be important for many years to come.

1. Scavenger Hunt at a Park

Make a list of fun things to find at the park.  You can vary your list based on the time of the year (i.e. you won’t find red leaves in April).   Have a list of 10-15 things to find when you go to the park.  Be sure some of the items are challenging and you have to look hard for them.  When we do the scavenger hunt, we also take a bag to keep all the items we find (if you have live items like crickets or frogs on your list, I would find them, but let them stay in their natural habitat).

2. Visit the Ice Cream Shop

Go to the ice cream shop and get your favorite ice cream treat.  You have so many choices.   We love to go to the make your ice cream or frozen yogurt shop and mix in our favorite treats.

3. Have a Special Lunch or Visit School for Lunch

Surprise your son with a special lunch with just mom.  If you are able, visit him at school.  He will love the surprise of having lunch with mom.  Be sure to take one of his favorite lunches you can share.

If you are not able to visit for lunch at school, have a special lunch on the weekend at his favorite place.  Talk about everything he did during the week.

4. Have a Water Gun or Nerf Gun Fight

If it’s warm get out the water guns and have an old-fashioned water gun fight.  If it’s not so warm, use the nerf guns.  Hide behind trees, build a fort or hiding area in your backyard, have fun.

5. Play Words with Friends or Another Game

Playing Words with Friends on your phone or tablet can be fun and educational (i.e. practice spelling).  See who comes up with the best word for the most points.  Encourage your son to think of new (but real) words.

You can also play board games and card games.  You could play just one game or have a mom and son game night and play 3 or 4 of your favorite games.

Never forget a memory, write down all life’s special moments in Mom’s Memory Journal.

6. Visit a Historic Park or Museum

Spend a day or an afternoon learning the history of the city where you live.  What important events happened in your town?  You could also visit a local museum that focuses on your son’s personal interests (for example, if he loves science, you could visit a museum of science and industry).

7. Play Games at an Arcade

Sometimes it’s fun to visit an arcade and just play games.  You can play video games or classics like skeeball. What is your favorite game to play together?

8. Go to a Local Festival or Parade

Does your local community have festivals, fairs, and parades?  Maybe there is a fall festival or pumpkin festival you can visit.  We love to go to the annual Fourth of July parade in our community.

9. Do a Science Project Together or Build a Lego Project

Boys love to build things.  Have you tried working on a science project or building a large Lego set together?  If you don’t want to purchase a Lego set, you can probably use the extra Legos you have around the house and build something you and your son create together.

10. Play Mini-Golf

Mini-Golf is always a fun outing.  Unless you practice daily, everyone seems to have about the same skill level.  It’s fun to see who can get a hole-in-one or who takes the most swings to get the ball in the ball.

These are just a few fun ideas for mom and son dates.  Having time with just your son is special and builds your relationship.  You may not be able to have a mom/son date every week but be sure you set aside time special memories with your son.
