When I was a little girl, I remember going to Sunday School and singing a song that went something like this, “I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy deep down in my heart….” If I had to summarize in one sentence what Katie Hornor’s new book In Spite of Myself is about, I’ve got the joy of Jesus deep down in my heart seems to be the perfect fit. In Spite of Myself shows us that choosing praise makes a difference and it’s possible to choose praise even on the days when life is hard.

Choosing praise isn’t always easy. On the hard days or when unexpected things happen to us, choosing praise means we have to make an intentional choice to praise and not be negative. In this 4-week devotional, In Spite of Myself, Katie Hornor shows us that praise is a choice. We can choose to be angry, we can choose to be negative or we can choose praise.
She also reminds us that no matter what happens in life, God has a bigger purpose and a bigger plan. God has never forgotten us but is always divinely orchestrating all events.
In Spite of Myself is a very personal book. Katie Hornor shares her life experiences from her heart. She tells about big disappointments, times when she did not see a clear path ahead, the challenges of parenting 5 kids and more. Reading this book is like sitting down with a close girlfriend and having a heart to heart talk.
Choosing Praise in All Circumstances
No matter what your circumstance, In Spite of Myself will show you God is faithful. He is not surprised by your circumstances and He ultimately has an amazing (and sometimes unexpected) plan for you. As readers, we are reminded when we have unexpected events in life or hard times, we have 2 choices: negative and praise.
When we intentionally choose praise, it will make difference in our lives and our attitudes just as choosing to be negative will also impact us.
In Spite of Myself is written as a 4-week devotional. One of my favorite parts of this book is each day includes a scripture specific to the daily reading. Each day you write the Bible verse and meditate on the message. Writing the verse helps make the verse more personal to you.
I highly recommend In Spite of Myself. You will be encouraged as you see how God has worked in the life of Katie and how He is working your life too. You will love Katie’s sweet spirit and tenderness sharing how God is not working in all of us.
